Stable Diffusion 1.5 Inpainting is a latent diffusion model released by Runway, which also trained Stable Diffusion 1.5 with CompVis and Stability AI. It resumes from the Stable Diffusion 1.2 checkpoint, adding 440,000 steps of inpainting-specific training at 512x512 resolution on the LAION-Aesthetics v2 5+ dataset.
Unlike a standard text-to-image model, it edits a masked region of an existing image. Its UNet has 5 extra input channels for the masked image and the mask, so a prompt only regenerates the masked area and leaves the rest untouched.
Runway reported an FID of 1.00 and LPIPS of 0.141 on the Latent Diffusion Models evaluation protocol, ahead of Latent Diffusion Inpainting, CoModGAN, and LaMa.
Released in October 2022, it remains one of the most widely used inpainting checkpoints, with community tooling built around it. It's free through Puter.js, and suits object removal, background replacement, and product photo touch-ups.
